In preparation for a busy new year, Modern Lantern sat down to talk to one of our favorite interior designers, Kelli Ellis, about trends and tips for interior design in 2016. Kelli, who has appeared on HGTV and TLC as in numerous magazines, is one of the creators and speakers of the number one interior design networking event - Design Campus. From January 21st to the 23rd, Kelli will be joined by many other incredible speakers at the Dallas Winter Market for Design Campus Live. Join us for the perfect opportunity to grow your business this next year and get ahead on what’s hot for 2016. Here’s some tips from Kelli ahead of time!

Floral chair design

What is your favorite new style/trend for 2016?
I am so excited to see wood tones comeback! Industrial finishes are slowly moving out as the new year and new trends move in and the old guard of darker wood tones will emerge. Florals on a grand scale have been making a comeback as well. Bold sofa patterns make the statement your grandmother made - colorful, bold but now bigger and more modern and versatile.

multi functional sofa

What is your go-to organizational tip for designing a family living space?
Functional furniture is key! With multi-use spaces, it's important for furniture to be multi-functional as well. Furniture that transforms into storage pieces are a must for high traffic spaces! An ottoman that stores toys, blankets, magazines, etc. is just one example. At least one enclosed case piece for extra storage as well, is ideal.

What color schemes do you suggest designing with in the new year?
Well, Pantone likes to tell us what we should use in design. According to them, the colors of the year are light pink and blue. We are starting to see plenty of blush tones used well. It’s all very light and airy! I say take some cues from the designers but in small doses. Don’t base too much on trend but find ways to incorporate trends into you or your client’s personal style and preferences.

What are some of your favorite new year easy room update tips?
Art! Change out artwork. Go bigger and bolder- it’s too easy! Create a vignette or wall college where a larger piece once hung for a cheap and easy update. Embrace Pantones colors, light pink and blue, in new focal points such as a single furniture piece or room accents. Left bank Art is one of my favorite go-to art suppliers. With flexible sizing, framing, and display options at the best price points on the market.

Thanks for listening,
Carrie Fitzwater
